1. AUN-QA: Free SAR Zoom Clinic for “Writing a Good SAR”.

Organizer: Education Quality International (EQI) in collaboration with AUN-QA

The daily 1-hour SAR Clinic will be conducted over 10 sessions from.

Registration Conditions 20- 24 April and 27 April – 1 May 2020

• Any AUN-QA member university can register but priority will be given to universities which have been allocated AUN-QA programme assessment in 2020 as well as CLM countries.
• Each university can submit more than 1 participant but one place will be given first and the rest will be allocated if the places are not fully taken up.
• Participants must have knowledge of AUN-QA Programme Framework (version 3). Confirmed participants are encouraged to attend all the 10 sessions. The registration is non-transferable once the participant has been allocated a training place.
• For effective learning, participants need to have good wifi connection as well as audio and camera.
• The session is free. It’s a collaborated community service project between AUN-QA Network and Education Quality International (EQI).

2. ANU-QA - FREE WEBINAR "REMOTE ATTENDANCE LEARNING MODEL"

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, University of Deusto and ASEAN University Network have adjusted its classrooms to online methodologies in order to continue supporting society and students as usual. We understand that all partner universities are moving to online modalities and would like to offer our support with this task through a free of charge online training focused on how to establish remote attendance model that will allow you to continue teaching and interacting with students normally.

“Remote Attendance Learning Model” is a free webminar offered by ASEAN University Network in cooperation with the University of Deusto which focuses on the important elements to consider regarding online learning.

Universities around the world have begun transitioning towards online classes as an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 and this may be a new undertaking for many of us here in the ASEAN region. To provide valuable information and assist in this effort, we have prepared a one-hour webinar in cooperation with the University of Deusto that will be helpful in providing our academics with the necessary tools to be effective online instructors.

The training focuses on how to establish a “remote attendance learning model” that will allow you to continue teaching and interact with your respective students. This course will cover the following major topics:

● The Learning Methodology

● Technology essential to online courses (Google Meet, Zoom, Loom, Twiddla (an online whiteboard and many more tools)

● Motivation and community engagement

● Student workload

3. Best Practices for Online Grading and Assessment (60 mins)

Online learning doesn’t just change how we approach content delivery and how students engage in learning. To be effective, we also have to adapt our approach to assessment. In this webinar we will consider a variety of best practices for online grading and assessment, including:

• Online activities and assessment techniques

• Individual assignments and team projects

• Formative assessments and summative assessments

Speaker: Dave Braunschweig, Professor of Computer Information Systems at Harper College Speaker bio: Dave Braunschweig has more than twenty-five years of experience as an independent certified technical trainer and professor of Computer Information Systems at Harper College. His credentials include a master's degree in Information Systems Management, a graduate-level Master Online Teacher certificate, CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+), and more than sixty computer industry certifications. Dave has a passion for open education and has published fourteen open educational resource learning guides, several open guides on best practices for online learning, and has co-authored an open textbook on programming fundamentals. He teaches an open course on open educational practices and is a frequent contributor on Wikiversity. Dave focuses his presentations on combining technical skills with real-world applications, so that participants are able to directly relate to and apply what they are learning.

Congrats to our Academic Partners on Achieving AUN-QA Institutional Level

On February 6, BUILD-IT academic partner VNU-HCMC International University officially announced their success in meeting the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance’s (AUN-QA) criteria for university quality assessment at the institutional level.

VNU-HCMC International University is the third higher educational institution among three BUILD-IT academic partners to achieve the AUN-QA institutional accreditation in Vietnam. The first two higher education institutions to earn this achievement were VNU Hanoi – University of Science and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in 2017.

The achievements confirm the universities’ success in strategy development as a continuous improvement of training quality, scientific research and building global standards for engineering programs in Vietnam. When AUN-IQAs quality standards are applied and promoted around the ASEAN region, the results are a better-educated, geographically mobile, and diverse technical workforce that is well-prepared to advance innovation and excel professionally in fields of critical importance to society.

Wrapping Up Successful Flipped Classroom Seminars

On January 8, 9 & 10, Flipped Classroom Seminars were held at three partner universities including Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, Lac Hong University and Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City. The seminars, delivered by Mr. James Cervin and Dr. Scott Danielson, have attracted over 111 faculties from the various universities. 

The concept of the flipped classroom was presented to promote active learning in students. The students are introduced to course content at home and practice that content through engaging in discussions, presentations and problem-solving activities in their classroom. In this blended learning approach, face-to-face interaction is mixed with independent study via technology. This doubles student access to teachers - once with the videos at home, and again in the classrooms - and increases the opportunity for personalization and more precise learning.

Participants completing these workshops have gained knowledge on core flipped classroom methodology and the pedagogical advantages this structure can provide. Through examples and demonstrations, participants enhanced their current level of instruction efficiency.

 

Academic Program Quality Through ABET/AUN-QA Compliance

 

 

BUILD-IT and ASU Successfully Highlight ABET Accreditation Value

On January 9, the BUILD-IT Alliance gathered over 80 key members from academia, government and industry for the ABET Accreditation Value and Success Showcase. Participants included Intel Corporation Vietnam, DOLISA, MOLISA and faculty members from more than 10 universities and colleges, including BUILD-IT academic partners.

ABET is a prestigious accreditation, but there are many myths about the difficulties in achieving it. To clear up some of these myths, panelists were gathered from government, industry and successfully accredited programs. Together with the keynote from Dr. Scott Danielson - an experienced ABET evaluator and trainer from Arizona State University - the audience had the opportunity to learn about the nature of ABET evaluation, its value and benefits, and minimize the fears of getting accredited.

Graduates from an ABET-accredited program will have a solid educational foundation and are capable of leading the way in innovation, emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

Applied Project-Based Curriculum Implementation

 

 

USAID BUILD-IT & Dow Vietnam STEM Program: Engineering Projects in Community Service Final Showcase and Future Integration

On January 18, the USAID, BUILD-IT & Dow Vietnam STEM Program: Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) final showcase commenced. Over the course of a 5-month program, 157 STEM students worked closely with community organizations to develop a solid understanding of the challenges of public safety, public health, smart cities and elder care in Vietnam. From this, 27 unique engineering-based prototypes were created as the unmistakable sweet result of the students’ innovation, 21st century skills, design thinking, and real-world engineering in the Final Showcase.

Among the solutions presented to judges from Dow Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh University of Technology, Saigon Hi-Tech Park Incubation Center and USAID, there were three innovative projects that stood out and were announced as winners:

• Smart Alarm – An anti-theft alarm originally created to address the challenges that students face on campus; it then served as a public safety improvement from students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology
• Smart Walking Cane – A walking cane for the elderly, which helps send out user location information when detecting incidents from students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education
• Smart Walking Cane – A smart walking cane which can help the blind to walk by warning them of obstacles from students of Danang University of Science & Technology
