SYMPOSIUM ON TESTING SOLUTIONS FOR COMPOSITES

Composite materials are being used in an increasing variety of products and applications, as more and more industries realize the benefits that these materials offer. As the demands for lightweight composite structures for aerospace, ground transportation, and environmentally sustainable energy systems develop, so do the mechanical testing requirements for composite materials, components, and structures. Full characterization of the properties of anisotropic and inhomogeneous composite materials, for use in demanding structural applications, requires a wide range of mechanical tests. Basic characterizing and evaluation of any of the materials is defined by mechanical testing. But characterizing composites involves various key defining parameters like fibres & matrix phases, volume fractions, orientations, and direction of the load applied. Mechanical properties of composite materials like strength, stiffness and other properties are influenced by the orientation of the fiber, the concentration of the fiber, and the matrix. These materials exhibit different mechanical behavior in different directions which is dissimilar to metals.
In the afternoon of March 3rd, 2023, a symposium on "Testing Solutions for Composites" took place at S0206, Smart Bulding, University of Science and Technology, the University of Danang, 54 Nguyen Luong Bang street, Danang city.
Participants in the workshop included Mr. Vu Quoc Duong - Head of Representative Office of ZwickRoell PTE. Ltd in Vietnam; Mr. Tran Quang Kien – Vice Director of Machinery and Information Technology Joint Stock Company (MIT) and Head of Representative Office of ZwickRoell PTE. Ltd. In Vietnam; Representatives of Universal Alloy Corporation Vietnam in Dannang, Vietnam. From the faculty of Chemical Engineering, there were the attendance of the leader of the Faculty, lecturers and students of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

In this symposium, there were two topics:
- Topic 1: A introduction on ZwickRoell PTE. Ltd.- Presented by Mr. Tran Quang Kien.
- Topic 2: Testing Solutions for Composites - Presented by Mr. Vu Quoc Duong.

The workshop introduced testing methods for mechanical properties of polymer and composite materials, including some new testing methods.  At the conference, delegates, lecturers and students discussed surrounding the content of the topics and discussions with ZwickRoell representatives, such as: ZwickRoell PTE. Ltd. provides TestXpert software packages for experimental systems in the market, so does ZwickRoell PTE. Ltd provide any free TestXpert software packages to the universities in Vietnam for teaching? For composite materials, what tests and what standards are commonly applied in Vietnam? Currently, does the ZwickRoell office in Ho Chi Minh or MIT have any program to support students such as funding scientific research activity for students, internship,...?
 The symposium took place successfully and brought a lot of useful information to the delegates, teachers and students of the faculty of Chemical Engineering.
